You probably started healthy eating during your weight-loss program but unfortunately many diet programs don’t set people up for success once the diet ends. One of the most important rules for lasting weight loss is making healthier choices majority of the time. Continue on an eating regime that includes whole foods, high protein, moderate healthy fats and moderate carbs (the healthy kind, not those delicious battered chips from McDonalds! Why oh why can’t they be in the healthy carb list!)

Know How Many Calories You Need

Everyone is different, therefore the number of calories you need is unique to you. When we are in diet mode we restrict our calories and reduce our calories to create a deficit. Now that you’re in sustaining mode, you will need to re-calculate your daily calories. Make sure to keep track of your calories through an app such as My Fitness Pal as it can be incredibly difficult to over eat when we aren’t keeping track.

Portion Control

Portion control helps us loose weight and helps us to keep it off. It is very easy to overeat, especially when it’s the food we love. Who is going to have a big plate of pasta, potato bake, cake or pizza and say no thank you after a few mouthfuls? Exactly, no one. Make sure you eat smaller portions more frequently throughout the day instead of larger meals less often. Also try using smaller plates to reduce overeating.

Stay Hydrated

Drinking water was vital during your weight loss journey and it still is. Upholding an adequate water consumption is one of the most important rules when wanting to maintain weight loss. Water makes vitamins and minerals more accessible to the body and it helps you feel fuller for longer, reducing overeating and unnecessary snacking. Make sure you are drinking 8 glasses of water a day and try to remember to drink a glass of water before eating.
